Project description
Due to the rising incidence and unsustainable health care costs of Type 2 diabetes (T2D) and coronary artery diseases (CAD), large international studies are motivated to find genetic variant candidates for disease prediction, subtype classification and targeted precision therapy. Many statistically associated disease variants have been found but they are not yet usable as drug targets or early predictors due to small risk effect sizes and unaccounted disease subgroups. Here I propose a study to develop a multivariate, advanced statistical learning method for finding genetic subtypes of complex diseases. With support from the Centre of Excellence in Complex Diseases Genetics, I will develop and test the method with CAD and T2D. I will also work with longitudinal genomics and environmental data to analyse diabetes progression. The identification of genetic subgroups responsible for complex disease subtypes has potential to substantially improve disease prediction and targeted treatment.
