Project description
Previous social science studies have been unable to successfully explain why intergenerational family support is unequally distributed across generations. We argue that these problems have followed from ignoring evolutionary biological and psychological theories and factors. We develop an evolutionary social science approach for understanding the intergenerational kin ties by combining three cornerstones of evolutionary relevant factors (i.e., genetic relatedness, sex and lineage) with sociological concepts related to need and opportunity structures (e.g., socioeconomic resources, family structure and residential distance between kin) to provide a novel approach helping to explain the complex nature of intergenerational ties. The project will show whether and how evolutionary relevant factors still shape human behaviour in contemporary affluent societies and in which circumstances the societal development may override the effect of evolutionary rooted tendencies.
