Project description
This project explores the poetics and politics of Arctic geographies in contempary fiction and art. Since the signing of the Kyoto Protocol in 1997, the Arctic has entered worldwide public discussion to an unprecedented extent. In parallel to this, the last twenty years have seen a drastic increase in fictional and artistic representations of the Arctic. The project has two primary aims. Firstly, it investigates how Arctic geospheres are aesthetically shaped and mediated to become vehicles of environmental and (geo)political concerns. Secondly, it traces the continued impact of historical representations of the Arctic by reading contemporary literature and art through the prism of earlier Arctic discourses. This focus on the poetics of geography in Arctic fiction and art is combined with a focus on the medial dimensions of these geographical imaginaries, The project thus examines the physical and medial spheres through which contemporary Arctic imaginaries are created.
