Project description
This project aims to investigate the systems-level neuronal mechanisms underlying short-term memory (STM) and working memory (WM) in humans. STM and WM are introspectively coherent and have a limited capacity. Yet, the neuronal processing underlying these functions is distributed across brain anatomy and over time. This project aims to discover how this distributed neuronal processing is integrated into subjectively coherent memory functions. To this end, this project uses modern neuroimaging techniques, combined with analyses of complex brain networks and computational modelling. It has a ground-breaking potential to bridge the gap between neurophysiology and psychology. STM and WM deficits are common in many brain diseases in humans. This work will give novel insights into the mechanisms underlying memory formation which may pave the way for novel treatments and cognitive training.
