In this prospective, population-based birth-cohort study of 923 Finnish children, our goal is to study how the airway metabolome (the collection of small molecules) and microbiome (the collection of microbes) of infants relate to acute respiratory infections (ARIs) and asthma. The study is conducted in collaboration between University Of Turku and Harvard Medical School (Boston, USA). These Finnish children have been followed up to age 7 years. The proposed project will not only advance research into understanding the complex interplay between the airway microbes, infant’s immune response, and mechanisms of ARIs and asthma in children, but will also guide the development of targeted interventions for infants at high risk of these common conditions. In addition, the airway metabolomic and microbiome profiles as well as individual metabolites will identify children at high risk for ARIs or asthma, which will, in turn, help us to develop preventive strategies to these children.
