Project description
New and more efficient applications of light emitting diodes (LED) and photodiodes are needed to meet the ambitious renewable energy goals set for the future, as well as e.g. for developing new optical cooling techniques. Recently low power electroluminescent cooling of small band gap LEDs has been demonstrated, but to reach higher power densities predicted by theoretical considerations requires higher bias voltages, more efficient light extraction, lower losses and high internal and external quantum efficiencies. We aim to develop III-V semiconductor material and device related building blocks to decrease the losses in order to reach the cooling regime in thermophotonic devices. For this, fundamental understanding of the device operation and growth of very high quality abrupt and graded semiconductor material composition and doping profiles is required. Success in the project would lead to a major scientific breakthrough towards practical applications of EL cooling.
