Project description
After fossil fues have been the main energy resource for the past 100 years, humankind has to face global warming and a warning poluttion of teh earth´s ecosystem. Therefore, the energy transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy resources is a main challenge of our time. However, this requires a new way to store electrical energy decentralized using lithium-ion-batteries (Li-B). These Li-B are made of elements such as lithium, cobalt and copper, which are difficult to process. In Finland, deposits exist which consist of minerals bearing these elements. This could be a chance for Finland to become a supplier of these elements when their processing can be guaranteed. The main process to obtain them is called flotation, which requires a mixture of partly toxic chemicals. We study a new kind of chemical, which is a by-product of the pulp and paper or food industry and thus sustainable and harmless, to separate minerals to obtain elements used for Li-B production in a prosperous way.
