Project description
This project concentrates on studies of astrophysical transients such as supernovae as a part of an active research environment at the University of Turku (www.utu.fi/sne). Observations of transients will be conducted using world's largest telescopes (such as the Very Large Telescope of the European Southern Observatory) equipped with state-of-the-art instruments, in order to capture and understand the evolution of the object. The surrounding environments of the transients will be studied, providing constraints on the stellar populations and progenitors that give rise to these transients. Involvement in instrument building is also included in the research plan. This will promote technology transfer and synergy between science and industry in Finland. As the next decade will be marked with the advent of large transient surveys and giant telescopes, we are now in the critical point of understanding these objects and preparing for new discoveries and science exploitation.
