Project description
Plant cells are surrounded by a plasma membrane separating the cell interior from the outside. Signals from other cells or the environment are perceived by plasma membrane receptors. Other plasma membrane proteins include structural proteins and many enzymes. The activity of those enzymes is simultaneously regulated by a plethora of signals. While individual regulators are known, the integration of signals leading to accurate regulation is currently not understood. This project aims to understand the integration of signals that lead to a fine-tuned output and subsequently acclimation to adverse environmental conditions. Humanity is facing the challenges of climate change and an increasing demand for food and plant materials. Therefore, elucidating this molecular signal processing is essential for improving plant stress tolerance against pathogens and abiotic stresses including nutrient limitation, salinity, and drought while maintaining or enhancing plant productivity and crop yield.
