Project description
Mitochondria are key organelles in eukaryotic cells essential for cellular energetics, metabolism, and signaling. Importantly, mitochondrial function relies on the complex mitochondrial ultrastructure and membrane dynamics, which abnormalities lead to organelle dysfunction and eventually cell death. To date, the molecular mechanisms of mitochondrial architectural organization and factors involved in regulation of mitochondrial dynamics remained largely unknown. The proposed research will identify novel proteins critical for mitochondrial morphogenesis and dynamics, and address their cellular roles important for mitochondrial function, turnover, and survival. As a result, the findings will provide new insight into the molecular aspects of mitochondrial structure and function. Furthermore, the studies will advance our understanding of fundamental life processes and shed light on the principles of mitochondrial diseases.
