Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) causes severe respiratory tract infections (bronchiolitis) in infants. There is no vaccine or effective treatment against RSV. In this study we aim to characterize how infants immune system responds to RSV and use these data to identify potential targets for vaccine and drug development. We will recruit infants <1 year of age with bronchiolitis and healthy controls of the same age and collect blood and nasal wash samples. These samples will be analyzed using novel single-cell RNA sequencing method that gives a very detailed view of the function of immune cells. In addition, we will characterize how nasopharyngeal microbiota modulates immune responses to RSV. We will also follow up the study subjects to analyze how early life immune response to RSV affects development of recurrent wheezing or asthma later during childhood. Better understanding of infants immune responses against RSV could help to find new targets for vaccine and drug development.
