Project description
The use of supercritical fluids has been identified to be a promising solution in increasing efficiency and reducing emissions when compared to conventional power plant technology. This project investigates the loss mechanisms and fluid dynamics phenomena when expanding supercritical fluids and fluids close to the critical conditions. In addition, the study investigates how the type of fluid and molecular weight influences on flow phenomena and losses. The study concentrates especially on investigating the fluid dynamic losses along expansion in turbine stator and rotor, but the results of the study can be applied also in other application in where supercritical fluids are expanded. The study is based on the use and development of accurate numerical methods and experimental methods that allows studying the expansion of supercritical fluids with high accuracy. As a final result, new type of loss correlations will be generated for turbines operating with supercritical fluids.
