Project description
Fire is an important ecological and environmental factor in the boreal ecosystems. Changes in fire activity influence directly the structure and composition of boreal forests, and have indirect impact on ecosystem services such as carbon storage and biodiversity conservation, and the economic value of the forests. Here we reconstruct the long-term (2000 years) fire regime and its main drivers in northern boreal forests in Fennoscandia through integration of sedimentary charcoal and dendrochronological records. By implementing novel data analysis and statistical approaches we are able to produce more detailed reconstruction of the natural variability of long-term fire activity, of the main factors controlling the fire regime and of the role of fire in boreal forest diversity. This knowledge is critical in understanding the processes behind present-day and future fire regime and its role in shaping boreal forests, when planning the management and conservation practices in boreal forests.
