Project description
The project investigates a common disorder, knee osteoarthrosis with a multi-disciplinary approach before and after treatment. The Applied physics partner conducts thorough multimodal assessment of joint dysfunction, pain, periarticular muscles and their neuronal connections, joint anatomy and biomechanical function. In parallel, the Biomedicine partner concentrates on examining the synovial fluid and the extracellular vesicles that carry hyaluronan, a molecule that affects knee joint wellbeing but can also initiate inflammatory reactions. The project combines biomedicine and cell biology, especially the inflammation present in the synovial fluid of OA patients to medical physics, that is, biophysical, imaging and neurophysiological measurements, to create a individualized approach of knee OA that is useful for treatment planning, efficacy assessment, patient follow-up and eventually to the design of new treatment options.
