Technologies that non-invasively detect neuronal activity in model animals will provide important information about how the healthy brain functions, and how diseases of the brain impact its normal function. In Medicum of University of Helsinki, we will develop genetically encoded fluorescent indicators that report on neuronal levels of calcium in the brain at large depth by emitting light in the near-infrared portion of the light spectrum. These calcium indicators then will be combined with genetically encoded optogenetic tools that modulate the brain activity. The optogenetic tools can be activated with the light of the different wavelength, independently of the near-infrared fluorescent indicators. The resulting enhanced spatial and temporal resolutions of neural activity imaging and modulation deep in the brain will increase knowledge of brain function and should lead to new treatments for brain disorders in Finland and worldwide.
