Project description
Our project seeks reasons for the recent strong and unexpected decline in fertility and increase in childlessness in the Nordic countries and Finland in particular and addresses the social and gender inequalities in changing family formation dynamics (cohabitation, marriage, and childbearing). We use uniquely excellent register data and advanced statistical methods to study the fertility of men and women. We apply a dynamic life course perspective to study linkages between fertility and partnership life courses, and trajectories of education, employment, financial resources and regions of residence, challenging and developing the prevailing theories and approaches. Our innovative approach produces a scientific understanding of the drivers of fertility decline, obstacles to family formation and the inequalities involved also required for evidence-based policy-making on a highly topical policy issue. The research is carried out at the University of Turku.
