Project description
Interest in Arctic marine technology is very high. Traditionally, this interest has been related to transport and offshore engineering in ice covered seas. Now the global warming has caused political and industrial interest on the Arctic, and also increase in the importance of Arctic research. The Aalto Ice Tank is a 40 m × 40 m water basin equipped to produce sea ice in model scale. Experiments are important in research on sea ice and on ships and structures in ice, and in validation of the theoretical models developed. The basin is unique in Europe because of its dimensions and, in particular, its large width. The basin is multifunctional, and can be used for open water tests also. Aalto Ice Tank has been thoroughly renovated and upgraded and is an open for use for visitors according to Aalto’s access guidelines and pricing principles.
