Project description
ICOS is a European scale distributed research infrastructure (RI) for on-line monitoring of greenhouse gases (GHGs). ICOS RI consists of national networks in 12 countries with in total over 100 measurement stations, and European-level coordination organization. ICOS Finland station network consists of 14 stations located in typical boreal ecosystems, focusing on coniferous forests and peatlands. The stations are operated by the University of Helsinki (UH), Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) and the University of Eastern Finland (UEF). Four of the stations belong to SMEAR (Stations for Measuring Ecosystem-Atmosphere Relations) station network, and 4 are part of Pallas-Sodankylš GAW (Global Atmosphere Watch; Global Meteorological Organization) supersite operated by the FMI. ICOS network is using established routines, protocols and instructions for observations and it produces long-term, continuous and high quality data for needs of climate change research.
