Beskrivning av projektet
The project investigates birth cohort studies as a historically specific form of scientific knowledge-production. Birth cohort studies follow a group of people born around the same time (e.g. the same week or the same year) within the same country, city or other region from childhood to youth and adulthood and sometimes to old age. The questions posed to the data generated in the course of the study can be medical, sociological or something in between. This form of knowledge-production was born after the Second World War. Our project inspects the background and the conditions of its emergence, its development and its social and scientific signifigance. Because the history of the birth cohort study coincides with a period of extraordinary change and dynamism in (medical) science, an investigation into the history of birth cohort studies also opens up a fresh view on the development of contemporary history of science and science-society relationships.
