The bipolar compounds, comprising electron poor and electron rich motifs in one molecular entity, constitute a central element of functional materials and are of primary importance for a diversity of photonic applications, analytical methods, diagnostics, and therapeutical tools. Employment of main group elements, such as phosphorus, offers unique pathways to the photoactive species with outstanding optoelectronic performance. The project will develop new generations of molecular dyes with appealing photophysical behavior, stability and physiologic compatibility. The novel methodology resides on the yet untapped possibilities suggested by rich reactivity and electronic features of organophosphorus blocks, which will be used in the design of unconventional molecular architectures with tunable optical properties to progress the fields of optical imaging, sensing and electroluminescent devices.
