Beskrivning av projektet
As the ’baby boomers’ age, marital and family relations among the elderly are changing, witnessed in the rapidly increasing rates of ”gray divorce”, or of childlessness in old age. LoveAge investigates trends in divorce and remarriage in old age (aged 50+) and how they affect social and family relations in Finland and Europe. The project uses high-quality survey and longitudinal data from the Generational Transmissions in Finland (Gentrans) study in 2007-2018 and from Survey of Health Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) in 2003-2017, enabling for the first time a direct comparison of social relations of the elderly in Finland and other European countries. We investigate how the timing of partnership transitions affects family contacts, and how having a spouse and parenthood shape social networks in old age. Implications for the happiness and health of the elderly are assessed. Our experienced research group includes leading international experts on family relations and ageing.
