Beskrivning av projektet
Transitioning to sustainable energy systems is key to achieving secure livelihood for an increasing world population. Many scholars agree that 100% Renewable Energy (RE) will accomplish this. However, the shift to the desired system depends on material availability. Rare-elements may limit the role of certain technologies. Broader material production could affect our ability to transition to RE systems. Thus, studying material needs is crucial to outline proper technical solutions and policies. Neglecting this factor may impede the transition towards a 100% RE system and secure livelihoods. This project investigates system-wide material need for the transition to a net zero emission energy system in order to identify bottlenecks and propose technical solutions and policies. Moreover, we aspire to assess the potential sustainability risk, both by identifying critical materials and calculating system wide energy return on energy invested.
