The project CNTstress develops the hypothesis that by using carbon nanotube (CNT) based materials for the development of stress-grading systems, it might be possible to improve the efficiency, performance and reliability of an electrical machine. The research will create novel links between the promising carbon nanotube technologies and the need for new technologies that could significantly improve the efficiency of an electrical machine. The focus is on the investigation and definition of the use of CNT materials to help develop the methodology, tools and underlying theory of a new paradigm that couples the use of CNT materials for improvement of stress-grading and protection systems in high-voltage machines and the emerging perspective for electrical machine efficiency improvement. The research will generate considerably improved modelling capability, which may allow the development of more efficiency and better functional insulation systems for high-voltage electrical machines.
