Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Sources (ECRIS) are used for the production of highly charged ion beams for nuclear physics. The technology of modern ECRISs is based on superconducting magnets, which sets limits for ECRIS development based on the currently applied configuration of the minimum-B magnetic field topology. Furthermore, the stability of ECRIS plasma and the quality of the extracted ion beams is inherently related to the strength and topology of the magnetic field. In this project we will construct a novel ECRIS based on permanent magnets. The magnetic field of the ion source has a significantly different topology in comparison to existing ECRISs. Successful demonstration of high charge state ion production with the prototype ion source will open new possibilities to enhance the performances of next generation ECRISs and, thus, nuclear physics research and applications. The new ion source will be used for fundamental studies of plasma instabilities and beam quality.
