Project description
Exposure to adverse prenatal and childhood environment may affect neurocognitive development and increase the risk for neurodevelopmental disorders, such as autism or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, in the offspring. Studies are needed to pinpoint which environmental factors are neuropathological or neuroprotective, and how these effects are exerted. We will study how prenatal/childhood exposures, such as persistent organic pollutants (POPs), maternal thyroid function and inflammation, and folate levels associate with neurodevelopmental outcomes in the offspring in the context of large Finnish prospective cohorts and international consortia. We will also study if offspring epigenome mediates or genome moderates these effects, and whether there are direct (epi)genomic associations. This knowledge will aid in preventive actions of early neurodevelopmental disorders and in promoting healthy ageing.
