Project description
The burden of age-related conditions, such as dementia, frailty and disability, is increasing globally due to population ageing. The objective of this proposal is to examine the longitudinal associations of cardiovascular and behavioural risk factors with dementia, frailty syndrome, and disability. The specific risk factors under investigation are systolic/diastolic blood pressure, blood lipids, glycaemia, adiposity, inflammatory markers (and infections), smoking, alcohol consumption, physical inactivity, sleep and life stress. The project is based on individual-level data from 23 cohort studies of 1,006,693 participants from Finland, Europe and the US, with prospective follow-ups for age-related conditions ranging between 10 and 50 years. In addition, new clinical data collection is proposed for one of the participating studies. Our findings will inform future clinical guidelines and public health policies to prevent and delay the onset of dementia, frailty syndrome and disability.
