The research project seeks to understand how students learn complex conceptual knowledge. The learning process is investigated from viewpoint of relational theory of knowledge and its relational conceptual schemes. The specific context is learning relational knowledge pertinent to physics but results are generalizable to other scientific knowledge too.
The research deepens our understanding of the complexities of learning advanced scientific knowledge by finding out the most important relational knowledge schemes that learners utilize and construct in learning of advanced knowledge. The practical objective is to develop learning solutions, which support the development of learners’ conceptualization, knowledge construction, and critical and argumentative thinking in learning. Such knowledge about the role relational schemes is central for design of educational solutions in higher education and in science education.
