Project description
In this project a new generic method, by which the detailed mechanisms of nanoparticle live cell interactions can be studied step by step in situ, will be developed. The method is based on fluorescence lifetime microscopy in which the fluorescence lifetime of the fluorescing species, rather than its intensity, is used to create the image. By utilizing environmentally sensitive fluorescent probes both the distribution of the probe in the sample and the factors that affect the fluorescence lifetime of the probe can be visualized. These factors, i.e. polarity, pH, hydrophobic properties, oxygen concentration and molecular interaction, will give detailed information on the nature of the interactions between the studied nanoparticle and its surroundings. The aim is that the developed method can be applied to a variety of important problems such as environmental, health, and safety impacts of nanomaterials.
