Project description
Angiogenesis is an essential biological process that controls embryonic development and the hierarchical network of arteries, capillaries and veins is needed to maintain tissues homeostasis. Malfunction is evident in chronic venous diseases including venous malformations, venous insufficiency and occlusions. We aim to gain a better understanding of physiological growth and maintenance of venous circulation and pathological mechanism of venous disease to develop evidence based molecular therapies that are currently lacking. To accomplish our aims we use biochemical, cell biological and 3D culturing models, advanced light microscopy, and novel disease models. As an outcome of the project we expect breakthroughs in the understanding the processes underlying the normal vascular morphogenesis, organ and vessels type specific regulation, and dysfunction in venous pathologies to identify molecular targets to prevent venous diseases in experimental models and for future therapies.
