Project description
Malaria parasites use an elegant membrane-embedded protein machinery for impressively fast and efficient movement and invasion of host cells. While this machinery serves as means for the parasite to attack its host, it may be possible to use it against the parasite in fighting back the intruder and even take advantage of the same principles in creating nanoscale biological machines for versatile purposes. We use structural biology and novel free-electron laser science to understand the molecular basis for the parasite motility and to develop new drugs against the parasite invasion machinery. In addition, we hope to reconstruct biological nanomachines that can be used for transport of substances within cellular frameworks.
