Project description
This project studies the ways displaced people can eventually become accepted in their host societies. We focus on historical migrations that enable studying the processual and temporal nature of recognition and inclusion. Our aims are to further the status of forced migrations in Finnish historical research; to develop interdisciplinary research methods for studying painful experiences; to contribute to public discourse with an increased understanding of forced migrations as a historical phenomenon; to analyze recognition as an academic concept; and to produce knowledge on the ways to apply the concept when studying integration. The project brings together history, literature and sociology to develop ethically sensitive methods to study difficult experiences in the individual and collective memory. Research data consists of oral history narratives of forced migrants, and the autofictional and autobiographical narratives in literature by evacuee authors.
