Project description
Plasmonics is a widely studied in subwavelength light guiding. Up to now, SPPs have been monochromatic. The project opens a new paradigm in partially coherent, polychromatic SPPs. The excitation is based on tailored illumination. Such polychromatic SPPs will be useful tools in future surface photonics. Another topic is geometric phase, a consequence of polarization-state changes. Since coherent SPPs are plane polarized, will they mediate geometric phase when created and annihilated? We also address using geometric phase to control physical phenomena through SPP interactions. A third topic consists of plasmonic optical elements based on geometric phase. Such elements, made of subwavelength gratings, will function in partially polarized light although geometric phase is not associated with partially coherent states. The SPP geometric phase and planar components, together with SPPs of tailored states of coherence, constitute new, emerging areas of surface plasmon photonics.
