Project description
Nano and micro sized particles of various chemical compositions are ubiquitous in our daily life. These minuscule particles (or beads, generally defined <5 mm in size) are commonly used in household products, cosmetics, lubricants, composite materials, elastomers etc. Over the years, microbeads (made of polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), nylon etc.) have replaced traditional, biodegradable alternatives such as ground nut shells or salt crystals. Eventually these micro beads end up into environment. The aim of the current project is to develop biobased and biodegradable products to replace current synthetic minuscale particles.
