This project investigates language learning environments from an interactional perspective by exploring how different kinds of material, spatial and technological resources relate to social interaction and learner participation during learning activities. It aims at re-specifying learning as the interplay of situation-specific resources and generic interactional practices. The project adopts a comparative, multimodal conversation analytic approach to inspect micro-interactional details of learner participation across materially different learning settings, in and outside classrooms and with the help of different tools. The empirical analysis looks at how the use of material resources relates to i) action formation, ii) the kinds of access to the resource that participants in small groups have, and iii) how materials organise the management and co-construction of knowledge. These analyses can also support the design, development and pedagogical use of new digital learning materials.
