Project description
Molecular imaging using positron emission tomography (PET) can provide information on molecular and cellular mechanisms of disease. Insufficient formation of new blood vessels (angiogenesis), uncontrolled inflammation and excessive fibrosis are key cellular mechanisms leading to cardiac dysfunction in ischemic heart disease that is the most common cause of heart failure. This study aims at studying the value of molecular imaging of angiogenesis with PET and specific probes in evaluation of patients with ischemic heart disease. We also test new, innovative molecular imaging probes for the detection of myocardial inflammation and fibrosis associated with repair of ischemic myocardial injury using PET. Our hypothesis is that molecular PET imaging can provide improved assessment of patients and new individualized therapies for ischemic heart disease.
