Project description
The increasing incidence of end-stage (ESRD) renal disease calls for better diagnostics and possibilities to utilize alternative therapy options for treating kidney diseases. Our research combines basic research results and genetic information on mechanisms of kidney differentiation to the needs of clinical nephrology in order to advance development of novel therapies and improved diagnostic tools. We will utilize our recent findings on regulation of kidney progenitors and further study their functional relevance to provide novel information for more efficient kidney organoid production. This will produce basic knowledge on mechanisms guiding renal differentiation and allow a new avenues for designing the regenerative renal therapies. Results of the project are expected in the long run to improve the quality of life and lengthen the life expectancy of the patients suffering of kidney diseases and lead to significant beneficial economic outcomes.
