Latest results suggest that electron-scale physics may solve major inconsistencies between observations and prevailing theories. The present theories rely on Maxwellian distributions to describe electron velocity distributions, while newest spacecraft experiments observe more complicated distributions. The project studies electron velocity distributions in space plasmas. First, satellite observations are used to characterise electron velocity distributions in near-Earth space. We will also simulate the distributions utilising Vlasiator, the world’s most accurate global-scale plasma simulation. The electron model of Vlasiator will be improved allowing to compute the velocity distributions of all species in a global plasma simulation. The project aims at scientific breakthroughs in space plasma physics and nearby fields, in astrophysics and fusion plasmas, since the most important plasma processes in these fields are identical.
