Nanoscience and –technology relies on material structures in the nanometer size scale. Although numerous ways to synthesize nanostructures exist, very few of them can make complex nanostructure shapes protected from the environment.
In the NANOIS project, we will develop a new way to make plasmonically active complex 3D nanostructure shapes inside very stable insulating materials. This will be achieved by utilizing the capabilities at the Nanoscience center in Jyväskylä to synthesize initial nanostructures and the Accelerator laboratory for the new technique of ion beam shaping of nanostructures.
Experimental characterization in Jyväskylä and computer modelling in Helsinki will be used to develop the first general model of ion beam shaping and how this can be used to achieve new kinds of photonic functionality. This will pave the way for new practical applications, several of which will also be tested within the project.
