Project description
I investigate how internal and external influences on our lives, such as, on the one hand, personality traits and personal values, and, on the other hand, the social interactions and social roles that we are embedded in, come to shape each other over the life-span. I employ two longitudinal data sets that track people and the social environments that they are embedded in through two time-periods in which major life transitions and upheavals take place. One data set follows children from the beginning of primary school (age 7) to the end of compulsory education (age 16). The other data set tracks parents-to-be from the beginning of pregnancy until the baby is three. Both the children and the parents have been assessed yearly from a multitude of perspectives. Almost all life transitions involve social relationships, and I will focus on how one's social environments (e.g. one’s classroom peers, one’s spouse) affect the changes that take place when people navigate through life transitions.
