Project description
SaP develops new approaches to sexuality and media culture by focusing on the notions of play and playfulness, as largely addressed in game studies. The project explores both the pleasurable and hurtful edges of play and playfulness in personal and collective sexual lives that unfold in increasingly media saturated and networked environments. The materials and themes examined vary from enjoyable immersions in sexual play to trigger warnings demarcating the limits of safe play, and applications of playfulness for the purposes of activism. By combining extensive conceptual analysis with thorough examination of media materials and people’s accounts of their own views and experiences, SaP offers novel ways for understanding the captivating and gruelling attractions of sexuality and contemporary media, as well as their connections with gendered and racialised identities.
