Project description
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common liver disorder. It may progress to severe liver disease. NAFLD can be caused by the metabolic syndrome, by lack of subcutaneous fat (lipoatrophy) or by common genetic variants. We will investigate in the 5 different types of human NAFLD, how the liver handles different types of fatty acids and how liver cells die and how scar tissue accumulates by using new microscopic and imaging techniques. We expect the new techniques to be available to patients and clinicians after completion of the project and to revise European and Finnish guidelines regarding early diagnosis and treatment of NAFLD.
