Project description
Private individuals become political actors through resources and capabilities that are often unequally distributed in society. Political empowerment refers to processes that seek to redistribute political and societal power in a more equal way. This project examines the limits and potential of European legal integration as a tool for such empowerment. The objective of this research is to examine whether EU law can create new forms of political agency that change the existing structures of power within or between the Member States. A critical socio-legal analysis of transnational empowerment will combine normative and empirical research in order to clarify how power and empowerment relate in European integration. The findings of this research will clarify the politics of European legal integration. They can also help the EU to overcome its current impasse in transforming the political practices of a democratic nation state into a credible transnational polity.
