Project description
In this project, ice nucleation on organic, black carbon, and metallic aerosol particles is studied via laboratory experiments. A new heterogeneous nucleation theory has recently been developed that makes a connection between water vapor adsorption and ice nucleation. In order to apply the new theory in predicting the outcome of the ice nucleation experiments, water vapor adsorption isotherms and water contact angles are measured for the aerosol materials in question. If successful, the new theory can be applied in weather and climate models to describe the formation of cirrus and other ice clouds in the atmosphere.
