Project description
The terrestrial cryosphere of the Northern Hemisphere is an important part of the global climate system, and recent studies have given indications that the cryosphere is changing; the seasonal snow cover is losing extent, mass and duration, and the soil frost may be disappearing. Studies to date have been limited in scope and in the amount of observations ingested; here, we will conduct a comprehensive multi-dataset study where we retrieve, assess, and compare decadal trends in snow cover, snow albedo, snowmelt timing and soil frost state. Furthermore, once the cryospheric trends have been identified and verified, we will compare them to the corresponding outputs from the state-of-the-art CMIP5 climate model family to investigate the climate models' ability to reproduce the changes. This investigation will provide climate modelers with quantifiable information on which to base future model development in this field.
