Project description
This innovative and pioneering project investigates the agency of common people in learning the law and using it in Finland in 1750-1920. Ordinary men, women and children acquired some legal literacy, i.e., skills in and knowledge of law, in various ways and in different degrees. This multi-faceted and elusive subject has long been neglected in historical research both in Finland and globally, although the phenomenon is very pertinent for understanding the Finnish (legal) culture in the longue durée and for comparing legal cultures in Europe – or globally. The interdisciplinary project has researchers from law, history and literacy studies. It uses innovative sources and uses a “(legal) history from below” perspective.
