Project description
“Voices of Democracy” investigates how democracy is conceptualized and debated in different contexts and by different groups, specifically the political representatives and citizens at large. By narrative and computational analyses of large and versatile textual data, we will develop a comprehensive account of how the people and their representatives have understood and discussed the nature and evolution of Finnish democracy over recent decades. The project brings together scholars of political and social sciences, literary studies and history as well as experts in data mining, statistical modeling, and the visualization of big text data. Together, conceptual history and transdisciplinary narratology provides the models and tools to study stories and narrative interaction as the primary vehicles through which politics is articulated and debated. What is more, the vocabulary used reflects and modifies the ways phenomena are made sense of and imbued with significance.
