Project description
Stainless steels are an important class of alloys containing iron and chromium. Yet, many of its properties are not well known. Particularly, the mechanisms and kinetics of segregation of chromium on the alloy surface and in the interfaces are not well understood. Iron-chromium is also used in nanostructures that are used for example hyperthermia treatments of tumors. In these structures knowledge of surface and interface properties of the alloy are important. Our project aims to develop a method that enables accurate modeling of the surface and interface properties of iron-chromium alloys. The model is based on accurate quantum mechanical calculations and will be benchmarked by comparing its predictions with experimental data obtained within the project.
