Project description
Investigating the role of itinerant trade in cultural encounters in various regions of Finland 1840–1940, the project studies traders, their consumers and the marketed commodities. The peddlers who walked the roads linked regions to one another, and were vital links in the development of retailing. Sellers were of various social, linguistic and ethnic backgrounds: Finnish- and Swedish-speakers alongside ethnic and religious minorities such as Roma, Karelians, Tatars, and Jews. Traders offered clothes and petty items such as buttons, ribbons and needles. There was an actual demand for their goods among consumers, many of whom were women, young people or groups in subordinate social positions. This project will have international significance in the innovative ways in which it simultaneously approaches retailing, consumption and minority studies. The project deals addresses questions that are highly topical today in light of prominent issues related to migration and transnationalism.
