Project description
Diseases caused by Group A or G beta hemolytic streptococci (GAS, GGS) are common in humans. The disease spectrum is wide, some of the disease manifestations are severe and postinfectious sequelae are linked to many streptococcal diseases. Asymptomatic throat carriage of GAS is common in children. Host susceptibility to streptococcal disease varies, which may be due to characteristics of the bacterium or susceptibility of the host. Our study will 1) study clinical GAS and GGS infections during two years in Turku and Tampere areas, 2) use whole genome sequencing to compare bacterial strains, 3) correlate genomic and host response data to clinical outcome and 4) model carriage/survival of bacteria in the host.
