Project description
Polarization of light can alter at THz-PHz frequencies. In the project, the ultrafast polarization dynamics is studied and practical devices utilizing it are developed. To achieve the femtosecond time resolution required to study the dynamics, we use an experimental technique based on interferometric polarimetry and two-photon detection. The specific aims are to access still unexplored ultrafast polarization dynamics in strongly localized “near-field” light, to create optical modulators faster than their modern electronic counterparts, to introduce a “ghost-imaging” system able to “see” through strongly aberrating media, such as biological tissues, and to measure ultrafast polarization variations in radiation from natural (and artificial) sources. Our results are expected to find applications in nanophotonics, optical information processing, cosmology, biology and medicine. The research takes place at the University of Eastern Finland and Aalto University.
